Madeline (Maddie) Armstrong joined the Downeast Institute in the summer of 2025 to support and expand DEI’s education and outreach programming. She brings a strong background in marine science and environmental education, with experience ranging from biodiversity research in the Southern Ocean to science communication and community engagement right here in Downeast Maine. Her research has focused on the use of environmental DNA (eDNA), population genetics, and morphology to investigate the biodiversity, biogeography, and evolutionary history of benthic invertebrates, particularly sea spiders, in Antarctic ecosystems. She has presented her work at national and international conferences and contributed to peer-reviewed publications and global conservation initiatives.

Originally from Hampden, Maine and a former Environmental Steward with the Maine Conservation Corps, Maddie is passionate about connecting young people and coastal communities with the marine environment. She has worked with DEI on various projects in the past and is thrilled to be part of the team full-time now. She holds a B.S. in Marine Science and Small Vessel Operations from Maine Maritime Academy and is currently completing her Ph.D. in Earth and Ecosystem Sciences at Central Michigan University.
