Dr. Elliott Roberts

 

Dr. Elliott Roberts is a marine biogeochemist with over 15 years of international experience studying carbon cycling, ocean acidification, and the chemistry of coastal and open-ocean systems. He has conducted oceanographic fieldwork in the Gulf of Mexico, North and Equatorial Atlantic, North Pacific Ocean, and along the U.S. East Coast. At the Downeast Institute, he leads laboratory and field-based research examining how ocean acidification, warming, and other physicochemical stressors influence shellfish life-history traits and strategies.

Dr. Roberts has broad experience analyzing water chemistry and biogeochemical parameters—including total alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon, δ13C, pH, O2/Ar ratios, and transient tracers such as CFCs and SF6—to assess anthropogenic carbon penetration, surface productivity, CO2 fluxes, and acidification trends in dynamic marine environments. He has contributed to the development of methodologies for marine carbon sequestration, particularly those involving ocean alkalinity enhancement and sediment interactions, by integrating satellite-derived site selection tools, carbonate system monitoring, and early-phase Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) planning.

He earned his Ph.D. in Marine Chemistry from Xiamen University, where he researched the marine carbonate system and anthropogenic CO2 in the South China Sea, and also holds an M.Res. in Ocean Science from the University of Southampton and a B.Sc. in Marine Biology from Hawaii Pacific University. Dr. Roberts is also the founder of NuWa Solutions, a science-led climate startup advancing ocean-based carbon removal through ocean alkalinity enhancement and ecosystem restoration.
