Here at the Downeast Institute we are striving to produce a line of American oysters (Crassostrea virginica) — also called “Eastern oysters”— that can thrive in the colder waters of eastern Maine.  We do this by selectively breeding adult oysters that demonstrate favorable growth on downeast lease sites. By breeding these selected broodstock with one another we’re able to amplify genes that show favorable growth and survival in our local waters.  The offspring will be able to support the expansion of oyster farming into Washington County so our residents can take advantage of the Maine oyster boom and help us diversify our marine resources.
