National Sea Grant announced that Downeast Institute’s collaborative research to find reliable ways to produce Atlantic sea scallops in the hatchery to sustain scallop production has been funded through a $14 million federal investment to improve aquaculture production.

DEI is partnering with Maine Aquaculture Innovation Center, Mook Sea Farm, UMaine’s Darling Marine Center, NMFS Milford Marine Laboratory and others on the project, “Cracking the Shell”: A Collaborative Approach to Developing Hatchery Production of the Atlantic Sea Scallop, Placopecten magellanicus.” This 3-year research project addresses early stage propagation strategies, one of the four national strategic areas of focus for strengthening aquaculture.
