On May 3, 2022 National Marine Fisheries Service announced that they are recommending Downeast Institute to be one of the 2022 Saltonstall-Kennedy Competitive Grants Program award recipients. DEI is one of 13 projects funded in the Greater Atlantic region.
The federal agency recommended more than $11.8 million for 44 projects that promote, develop, and market fisheries and and science and technology that promotes sustainable U.S seafood production and harvesting.
Downeast Institute’s work will build off a pilot-scale study conducted in Freeport and Jonesport in 2019 and is entitled, “An examination of softshell clam fecundity along the Maine coast: the influence of clam size, tidal height, season, and geographic region.”
