Director of Education Colleen Haskell continues to reach students during the pandemic.
The Covid-19 pandemic has not derailed DEI’s mission to provide high quality science education. Since March, DEI’s educators have been working hard to adapt our education program to accommodate remote learning. They developed free lesson plans, provided backpacks of summer learning supplies to Beals Elementary School students, and read science books aloud on DEI’s new YouTube channel.
To provide continuity and ensure active learning opportunities to students accustomed to attending Marine Science Days at DEI’s Beals campus each week, during the fall semester DEI educators traveled to Beals, Jonesport, and Lubec Elementary Schools to safely deliver hands-on science education programs directly to classes. Through these and other methods we were able to serve 100 students and thirteen teachers during the pandemic. As Covid-19 continues to impact education, DEI is committed to providing quality science education to as many students as possible.
