Downeast Institute’s efforts to sustain mussel production in the face of increased seawater temperatures and associated higher levels of predation was featured in the August 19, 2023 Boston Globe article, “As the Gulf of Maine warms, where are the mussels?” Kyle Pepperman, Downeast Institute’s Associate Director of Technology Transfer was quoted describing why DEI embarked on finding a way to grow mussels in the hatchery in an economical way. The mussel farmers that DEI works with to safeguard their crop from increased predation were also quoted.
