On February 4, Bangor Daily News featured a story about DEI’s recent study investigating repurposing vacant lobster pounds for the purposes of shellfish aquaculture in order to create economic opportunities in downeast Maine. “Vacant Down East lobster pounds could be the perfect growing grounds for scallops,” describes a preliminary experiment which found scallops in vacant lobster pounds grow faster and have a higher survival rate when compared with those farmed in the ocean.

The idea for this study came after we found success with growing oysters downeast in vacant lobster pounds. Read about that study here.
