Our Mission: Improving the quality of life for the people of downeast and coastal Maine through marine research, marine science education, and innovations in wild and cultured fisheries.
The vision of DEI is that our groundbreaking work will generate new knowledge of the marine ecosystem for all who depend on it. Our focus on applied marine research means that our research focuses on finding answers to real world problems, often brought to our attention by fishermen, school groups, and other community members.
Our research actively involves fishermen, students, and other ocean users. We integrate fishermen’s local ecological knowledge and technical fisheries expertise into study design to strengthen our research and ensures that technology transfer occurs.
Our Community Impact:
ADAPTIVE FISHERIES MANAGEMENT
DEI provides science-based leadership to adapt to a changing marine environment.
FISHERIES STOCK ENHANCEMENT & RESTORATION
DEI has produced hundreds of millions of seed clams for coastal communities.
DEI has assisted fishermen and other entrepreneurs create new aquaculture opportunities.
DEI’s marine education program makes relevant scientific exploration part of pre-K to 12 grade education
